Exact dollars depend on your gas rate, your electric rate, and your house's load, and any article handing you one universal number is guessing. The structure, though, is stable:

Against natural gas, the race is close and configuration decides it. Gas is cheap fuel; a heat pump is an efficient machine. A cold-climate unit moves several units of heat per unit of electricity purchased, and it does its best work in mild and moderate weather, which is most of the Wasatch heating season. The coldest single-digit stretches are where gas holds its ground.
